The CADR Problem Standard HEPA Filters Create

CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) is the metric that sells air purifiers. It appears on product listings, Amazon titles, and certification labels. Every air purifier OEM wants a higher CADR — but standard HEPA filters create a fundamental design trade-off:

Higher filter efficiency = finer fiber media = higher air resistance = lower airflow at the same fan power = lower CADR.

Most OEMs compensate by increasing fan motor size and speed — which raises noise levels, energy draw, and product cost. Low resistance HEPA filters break this trade-off by delivering H13 efficiency with a pressure drop 20–40% lower than conventional HEPA media, allowing the same fan to move more air and deliver higher CADR without the noise and power penalty.

Design example: Replacing a standard H13 HEPA (initial pressure drop: 180 Pa at 200 m³/h) with a low-resistance H13 HEPA (initial pressure drop: 110 Pa at 200 m³/h) can increase airflow by 15–20% at the same fan setting — translating directly to a higher CADR test result and a better product spec sheet.

H13 vs H14: Which Grade to Specify

GradeEfficiency @ MPPSPressure Drop (relative)Typical Application
H13 HEPA≥ 99.95%LowerResidential air purifiers, commercial HVAC, office
H14 HEPA≥ 99.995%HigherMedical, cleanroom, pharmaceutical, lab
U15 ULPA≥ 99.9995%Very highSemiconductor fab, nuclear, specialized lab

For the vast majority of residential and commercial air purifier OEMs, H13 is the correct specification. H14 is only justified when the end application genuinely requires near-total particle elimination — adding H14 to a residential product increases cost and pressure drop without a meaningful air quality benefit for the end user.

How We Achieve Low Resistance Without Sacrificing Efficiency

Conventional wisdom treats HEPA efficiency and pressure drop as a fixed trade-off. Our engineering approach breaks it through three levers:

1. Increased Pleat Count

More pleats = more media area per unit filter volume = lower face velocity per pleat = lower pressure drop at the same total airflow. We engineer pleat depth and spacing to maximize media area within your filter housing dimensions.

2. Optimized Glass Fiber Diameter

Finer glass fibers improve capture efficiency through diffusion and interception, but increase resistance. We use a bi-layer media design — a coarser pre-filter layer reduces particulate loading on the fine HEPA layer, preserving airflow over the filter's service life.

3. Extended Media Area Designs

For cylindrical or conical filter formats (common in tower and column air purifiers), we optimize media area by maximizing usable filter height and internal diameter — giving more surface area within the same external housing footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a low resistance HEPA filter?

A HEPA filter that achieves H13 or H14 efficiency (≥99.95% at MPPS) with a lower pressure drop than conventional HEPA media — through higher pleat count, optimized fiber design, or expanded media area. Lower pressure drop means higher CADR at the same fan power and noise level.

What is the difference between H13 and H14 HEPA?

H13 captures ≥99.95% of particles at MPPS. H14 captures ≥99.995%. H13 is correct for residential and commercial air purifiers. H14 is for medical, cleanroom, and pharmaceutical environments where near-total particle removal is required.

How does low pressure drop HEPA improve CADR?

Lower pressure drop allows the fan to move more air at the same motor power and noise level, directly increasing the CADR airflow component without sacrificing filtration efficiency. Result: better product spec sheet without increasing BOM cost.

Can I source custom low resistance HEPA filters from China?
