In the world of air purification, businesses often face a critical choice: should they source via OEM or ODM? While the terms are often used interchangeably, they represent two very different manufacturing philosophies.

What is OEM? (Original Equipment Manufacturing)

OEM is the "Build to Print" model. You provide the specifications, the drawings, and the material requirements. The manufacturer (Nantong Deli) provides the production line, labor, and quality control to turn your design into a physical product.

Best for: Established brands with their own engineering teams who need a reliable factory to scale production.

What is ODM? (Original Design Manufacturing)

ODM is the "Private Label" model. The manufacturer has already designed, engineered, and tested the product. You simply choose the product from their catalog and add your branding, packaging, and perhaps minor modifications.

Best for: Startups or distributors who want to get to market quickly without high R&D costs.

Nantong Deli's Hybrid Approach

Since 1993, we have supported both models. With 53 patents and 12 R&D engineers, we can take a rough sketch and turn it into a high-performance filter (OEM), or offer our existing patent-backed humidifier wicks and carbon filters for your private label (ODM).

Decision Framework: Choosing OEM vs. ODM for Your Filter Program

The choice between OEM and ODM is not simply a cost question — it depends on your market position, intellectual property strategy, time-to-market requirements, and long-term volume projections. Use the following framework to evaluate which model fits your business:

Factor OEM (Build to Print) ODM (Private Label)
Development Timeline 3–6 months (tooling + trials) 2–6 weeks (label/packaging only)
Upfront NRE Cost \$2,000–\$15,000 (tooling/molds) \$0–\$500 (artwork only)
Unit Cost at MOQ Higher initially; decreases with volume 20–40% lower (amortized R&D)
IP Ownership Buyer owns design rights Manufacturer retains design IP
Customization Depth Full: dimensions, media, materials, coatings Limited: packaging, colors, minor specs
Exclusivity Full exclusivity possible Factory may supply competitors with same base product
Best For Established brands, proprietary equipment manufacturers Distributors, startups, market testing

The OEM Process in Practice: From Drawing to Production

For buyers new to OEM filter manufacturing, here is how a typical project unfolds at Nantong Deli:

  1. Technical Brief: You provide dimensions, airflow requirements, media efficiency targets (e.g., MERV rating or equivalent), and operating environment specifications.
  2. Engineering Review: Our R&D team (12 engineers, 53 patents) reviews feasibility, identifies raw material options, and provides a Development Proposal within 5 business days.
  3. Prototype Production: First samples produced within 3–4 weeks, including dimensional inspection report and initial airflow performance data.
  4. Buyer Testing & Approval: You test the prototype in your equipment. We incorporate feedback and iterate — typically 1–2 revision cycles.
  5. Golden Sample Agreement: Approved prototype is retained as the "golden sample" against which all production batches are compared.
  6. Mass Production: Production begins against a formal Purchase Order. Each shipment includes a Certificate of Conformance referencing the golden sample specification.

The ODM Process: Private Labeling with Speed to Market

For ODM, the timeline compresses dramatically because product engineering is already complete. At Nantong Deli, our ODM catalog includes:

The critical caveat with ODM: because the manufacturer retains design IP, the same base product can technically be sold to multiple buyers. If brand differentiation is important to your market position, negotiate a geographic exclusivity agreement or invest in OEM to own the specification outright.

HAF Filters: Why OEM Is the Only Viable Model

It is worth noting that for HAF dehumidifier filters — our core product for the professional restoration market — ODM is not a practical option. Here is why:

Every LGR dehumidifier model has unique filter cavity dimensions, airflow resistance requirements, and mounting clip configurations. The Dri-Eaz LGR 700 F284 filter is dimensionally different from the Phoenix R200S 4029625 filter in ways that make them non-interchangeable. There is no "standard" HAF filter that can be private-labeled across multiple machine platforms.

This means HAF filter programs are inherently OEM programs — the filter must be engineered to match a specific machine's cavity and airflow specification. Nantong Deli has completed this engineering for 5 major LGR platforms, and those tooled configurations are available to restoration equipment distributors as OEM-equivalent replacements.

Minimum Order Quantities: What to Expect

MOQ differs significantly between OEM and ODM:

Protecting Your IP in an OEM Relationship

A common concern for buyers entering their first OEM manufacturing relationship in China is intellectual property protection. Here are the standard protections we recommend and support:
